FEM is committed to developing the skills of individuals who express an interest to study towards qualifications that will contribute to our sector i.e. Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment and the Faculty of Health Sciences. Students must be performing well academically and should be in good financial standing with the University. The bursary is reserved for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds and who do not have the means to fund their own studies.
Bursary Criteria
- South African citizens only
- All students must be in good financial standing with their university i.e. no outstanding fees from the previous academic years
- Preference will be given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds
- Combined household income must not exceed R 360 000,00 per annum
- Students with a good academic record
- Students who have been accepted to study at an approved institution or a South African public University
- Students must have successfully completed their first year of study i.e. no first year or post graduate students will be considered

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
You will be required to complete a short online questionnaire. Should you be shortlisted further, you will receive the FEM bursary application form to complete. Please ensure that you complete all sections of the application form and attach all supporting documents by 20 December 2023.
1. Your Identity Document. If you are younger than 16 years of age and do not have a green barcoded ID or smart ID card, you must submit a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate.
2. Identity Document for parent(s) (Father and/or Mother)/legal guardian of the household.
3. Copy of recent payslip, not older than three months, for each parent(Father and/or Mother)/legal guardian. This is for all types of employment or all forms of income for all members of the household.
4. If your parent(s) (Father and/or Mother)/legal guardian is retired, please provide a copy of an official pension slip or bank statement showing pension payment.
5. If your parent(s) (Father and/or Mother)/legal guardian works as an informal trader, please provide an affidavit signed by them to confirm this type of employment.
6. If either of your parents is deceased, please provide a certified copy of the death certificate.
7. If either parent(s) (Father and/or Mother) are not present in your life and/or do not financially support you and/or provide any maintenance please provide an affidavit indicating so.
8. If unemployed or have no proof of income, the source of income/maintenance/allowance must be provided per individual by means of an affidavit.
9. If you have indicated that a dependent in your household is a student, please provide proof of registration from their Tertiary Institution.
10. The bursary applicant must be in good financial standing with the university/college and therefore he/she is required to submit a certified academic record from the university/college.
(All the certified copies must not be older than 3 months)

2. Sasria 2024 Bursary
Bursary application
Sasria’s bursary scheme aims to assist with the creation of a talent pipeline for those skills that are scarce and are required within the organisation. Bursary applications are invited for young people who aim to study full-time towards an undergraduate university (academic) degree.
Eligibility requirements for the Sasria bursary
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying for the bursary (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- Must be a South African citizen.
- Must be currently in Matric or completed Matric.
- Must be between the ages of 18-35.
- Must be applying for First year in 2024 academic year.
- Must obtain a least an average B symbol (70%) in Matric.
- Must be aiming to study full time towards an undergraduate university (academic) degree in Insurance, Business Economics, Accounting, Investment, Finance, BSc Information Technology, BIT-Bachelor of Information Technology in Business Science and Mathematics.
- You may only apply once.
- Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.
Documentation: Make sure you attach the relevant documents.
- Certified copy of your South African ID or card (both sides).
- Certified copy of Matric certificate (if currently in Grade 12, a certified copy of latest Grade 12 report – Term 1, 2 or 3).
- Proof of parents’/guardian income:
- Employed parent(s)/guardian(s): a recent payslip.
- Unemployed parent(s)/guardian(s): an affidavit declaring unemployment.
- Self-employed parents(s)/guardian(s): An affidavit declaring monthly income.

- Proof of current registration at the University or University of Technology OR Proof of having completed Matric (Grade 12).

Minimum requirements
- Must be a South African citizen between the ages of 18 – 35 years.
- The minimum qualifying level for Matriculants is a Bachelor pass / University exemption in the final-year examination.
- Preference is given to learners who have University acceptance for the new academic year 2024 within the specified fields of study mentioned.
- Applicants already receiving a bursary or financial aid from another Institution will not be considered.
- Must be a South African citizen between the age of 18 – 35 years.
- Enrolled in full-time studies at a South African University or University of Technology.
- Applicants who are currently enrolled in a field of study specified above.
- Sound academic record with an average B-symbol and pass mark for all subjects, including final-year examination results plus admission to the University.
5. SAPPI Bursaries and scholarships
At Sappi, we want to encourage the brightest young talent to join our ever evolving industry.
Sappi awards a number of bursaries each year based on our annual skills audit and business needs. Our bursary scheme is intended to cater for talented and innovative young South African citizens. It is a talent-based approach where applicants who meet the minimum criteria are invited to a selection interview.
Who is eligible for a bursary?
School leavers or university students between 18 – 25 years old who are studying or intending to study full time at any South African accredited university in one of the following fields:
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science – Mechanical Engineering
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science – Electrical Engineering
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science – Chemical Engineering
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science – Industrial Engineering
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science – Civil Engineering
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science – Mechatronics
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science – Forestry and Wood Science
- National Diploma – Pulp and Paper
- National Diploma in Forestry
In addition, you are required to have:
- South African citizenship
- An average of 70% in Mathematics (not Maths Literacy), 70–80% in Physical Science and 60% in English and
- Qualifying points for entrance at the university or acceptance confirmation
Current university results will be considered for undergraduate students. Note that preference will be given to learners with an average of 75% and above in Mathematics and Physical Science.
