Key Duties and Responsibilities

One of the main responsibilities will be conducting physical compliance inspections at businesses, hospitality establishments, eateries, pubs and retail outlets.

Compliance Officers will verify the number of television sets at establishments and check whether the appropriate TV Licence is in place. They will also verify licence classifications, account status and other information recorded on the TV Licences database.

Where non-compliance is identified, officers may issue penalties in accordance with the relevant TV Licence Regulations and Broadcasting Act No. 4 of 1999.

The role will also involve identifying businesses that may be incorrectly using domestic TV licences for business purposes and updating establishment information in real time.

Dealer Validation and Retailer Support

Interns will also visit retailers and dealers to determine whether the automated TV Licence validation system is correctly configured and being used.

They may assist with training retail employees on identifying the correct TV Licence classification, using validation tools and understanding their legal obligations.

Compliance Officers will record training activities and retailer compliance information on the relevant systems and escalate non-compliant retailers where necessary.

Research, Data and Revenue Support

Another important part of the internship involves conducting surveys to understand why businesses may not be complying with TV Licence regulations.

Interns will gather both qualitative and quantitative information and document their findings in standardised inspection reports.

They will also identify outstanding TV Licence fees, explain available payment options and assist with registration and payment initiation where possible.

Accurate data collection and registrations will contribute to the SABC’s programme target of unlocking approximately R100 million in outstanding revenue.
