Grade 12 Senior Certificate Matric Rewrite 2026 – e-Registration for June Exams

If you are an adult who wants to complete your matric, improve your results or obtain a Senior Certificate, the Senior Certificate (Amended) provides another route for eligible candidates.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) allows qualifying adult learners to write the Senior Certificate examination based on the current curriculum. The qualification can also provide opportunities for further study, including admission to certain Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor programmes where the relevant admission requirements are met.

Who Can Register for the Senior Certificate?

The Senior Certificate is primarily available to adult learners aged 21 years and older who meet the required admission criteria.

Eligible candidates can include adults who have:

  • A General Education and Training Certificate (GETC).
  • A Grade 9 school report confirming that they passed Grade 9 or the old Standard 7.
  • A recognised equivalent qualification at the required NQF level.
  • An incomplete Senior Certificate.
  • An incomplete National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  • An existing qualification but want to improve their results or status.

There is also provision for out-of-school youth aged 18 to 21 in exceptional circumstances where they could not complete their schooling because of circumstances beyond their control. Such cases require verification and approval by the relevant Provincial Education Department.

Matric Rewrite and Result Improvement

The Senior Certificate (Amended) can be relevant to adults who previously attempted matric but did not complete the required subjects.

Candidates who already have certain previous Senior Certificate credits may have those credits recognised, subject to the applicable rules.

Adults with an incomplete NSC can also have options regarding completing the NSC or converting to the Senior Certificate. Importantly, the DBE states that a candidate who chooses to convert to the Senior Certificate may not later revert to the NSC to complete that qualification.

Subjects Available

The Senior Certificate (Amended) uses subjects based on the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).

Subjects include official languages such as:

  • English Home Language
  • English First Additional Language
  • Afrikaans Home Language
  • IsiZulu Home Language
  • IsiXhosa Home Language
  • Sesotho
  • Setswana
  • Sepedi
  • Xitsonga
  • Tshivenda
  • SiSwati
  • IsiNdebele

Other available subjects include:

  • Accounting
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Geography
  • History
  • Religion Studies
  • Computer Applications Technology
  • Information Technology
  • Life Sciences
  • Mathematical Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Sciences

Candidates must meet the required subject package for the Senior Certificate.

How the Senior Certificate Examination Works

The Senior Certificate examination is written during the May/June examination period. Unlike the NSC, candidates writing the Senior Certificate are exempt from School-Based Assessment (SBA), meaning the examination constitutes 100% of the final mark for the subject.

The DBE’s stated promotion requirements include:

  • Passing three subjects at 40%, including one official language at Home Language level.
  • Passing two subjects at 30%, including one official language at First Additional or Home Language level.
  • Obtaining at least 20% in the sixth subject.

2026 Senior Certificate Registration

For the 2026 Senior Certificate examination, the Department of Basic Education’s official registration page states that qualifying candidates were able to register from 1 October 2025 until 6 February 2026.

Registration could be completed online through the e-Government portal or at a provincial education office.

For online registration, candidates needed a valid South African ID number, email address and cellphone number. Supporting documents, including certified identification and previous qualifications where applicable, also had to be provided electronically.

Because the 6 February 2026 registration deadline has already passed, anyone looking for a future Senior Certificate examination should check the DBE’s official Senior Certificate registration page for the next registration period rather than relying on outdated registration dates.

Final Thoughts

The Senior Certificate (Amended) remains an important option for eligible adult learners who need another pathway to complete their school-leaving qualification, improve their results or continue towards further education.

If you are considering a matric rewrite, make sure you first confirm whether you qualify, which qualification route applies to you and which subjects you are allowed to register for.

The DBE also provides support through its Second Chance Matric Programme, which assists learners who have not met the requirements for the NSC or Senior Certificate.
